About Ocean Quest

Ocean Quest is one of Cairns’ best-known liveaboard dive vessels and has introduced thousands of people to scuba diving over many years.

Designed specifically for reef adventures, the vessel provides comfortable accommodation, spacious dive decks, fresh meals and easy access to multiple outer reef locations.

Because Ocean Quest remains on the reef, you’ll spend more time diving and less time travelling.

Why Learning to Dive on the Northern Great Barrier Reef is So Special

The Northern Great Barrier Reef is one of the most beautiful places in the world to learn to scuba dive. The warm, crystal-clear waters provide the perfect environment for building your confidence while exploring an underwater world unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

Discover an Underwater Paradise

As you begin your first dives, it’s easy to forget you’re breathing underwater. Your attention quickly shifts from your scuba equipment to the incredible beauty surrounding you. Beneath the surface is a living garden, bursting with colour and life. Hard corals, soft corals and giant clams create a spectacular underwater landscape, while tropical fish of every imaginable shape, size and colour weave effortlessly through the reef.

Nature’s Amazing Relationships

If you love nature as much as I do, you’ll be fascinated by the remarkable relationships that exist beneath the sea. Keep an eye out for cleaner wrasse carefully removing parasites from much larger fish at their underwater cleaning stations. You may also spot remoras hitching a ride with sharks, rays or turtles, forming one of the reef’s many extraordinary partnerships.

The reef rewards those who slow down. Relax, breathe steadily and simply take it all in. The more you observe, the more you’ll discover, from tiny nudibranchs hiding amongst the coral to graceful sea turtles gliding effortlessly past and curious giant Maori wrasse swimming over to investigate.

Watch for Flying Fish

And before you even enter the water, your adventure has already begun. As the boat approaches the reef, look behind the wake and watch for the brilliant turquoise flying fish. They often burst from the water, gliding gracefully across the surface before disappearing back beneath the waves, a magical reminder that every moment on the Great Barrier Reef is filled with wonder.

More Than a Dive Course

Learning to dive here is about much more than earning a certification. It’s about discovering a world that few people ever truly experience and creating memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the course you’ll master essential scuba skills including:

    • Dive planning
    • Equipment assembly
    • Underwater communication
    • Mask clearing
    • Regulator recovery
    • Buoyancy control
    • Emergency procedures
    • Safe ascents
    • Buddy diving
    • Marine conservation principles

These skills form the foundation for every future dive you’ll complete anywhere in the world.

Why Learn to Dive on a Liveaboard?

Learning aboard Ocean Quest offers several advantages over completing your certification entirely on day trips.

Instead of spending hours travelling between Cairns and the reef each day, you’ll stay where the diving happens.

This means:

    • More relaxed schedules
    • More time underwater
    • Better access to multiple dive sites
    • Beautiful reef sunrises and sunsets
    • More opportunities to meet fellow divers
    • Extra time with your instructors
    • A truly immersive Great Barrier Reef experience
